The Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape is a cross-border World Heritage. The largest part of the Neusiedlersee is situated in Austria, only a small part in Hungary. Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape is situated on the crossroads of several cultures and climatic zones and represents an important example of the culture and nature of the region. The Neusiedlersee (Neusiedler Lake) is surrounded by the nature of the Pannonian Plain. The Neusiedlersee is one of the largest steppe lakes in Europe. The lake is surrounded by wetland area with ponds, reedlands and salt marshes, it is home to an unique flora and fauna. Along the shores of the Neusiedlersee are many small picturesque villages, farmhouses and palaces, surrounded by woods, steppes, vineyards and fields of sunflowers. The Fertöd-Esterházy Palace is situated in the village of Fertöd, the design of the palace was based on the Palace of Versailles.
