Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape is a cross-border World Heritage. The largest part of the Neusiedlersee is situated in Austria, only a small part in Hungary. Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape is situated on the crossroads of several cultures and climatic zones and represents an important example of the culture and nature of the region. The Neusiedlersee (Neusiedler Lake) is surrounded by the nature of the Pannonian Plain. The Neusiedlersee is one of the largest steppe lakes in Europe. The lake is surrounded by wetland area with ponds, reedlands and salt marshes, it is home to an unique flora and fauna. Along the shores of the Neusiedlersee are many small picturesque villages, farmhouses and palaces, surrounded by woods, steppes, vineyards and fields of sunflowers. The Fertöd-Esterházy Palace is situated in the village of Fertöd, the design of the palace was based on the Palace of Versailles.    Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape: The Fertöd-Esterházy Palace in Fertöd, Hungary. Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape is situated on the crossroads of several cultures and climatic zones, it is an important example of the culture and nature of the region. Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001.

   Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape: Along the shores of the Neusiedlersee are numerous small villages, farmhouses and palaces, surrounded by vineyards and fields of sunflowers. The Neusiedlersee is home to an unique flora and fauna, the lake is an important bird area, 341 bird species were recorded around the lake, such as the coot, the crane, the stork and the spoonbill.

   Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape: The Gloriette is situated close to the small village of Fertöboz in Hungary. Fertöboz is situated close to Sopron. The neoclassical folly was erected as a memorial to the visit of Archduke Joseph of Austria in 1801. The Gloriette towers high above Fertöboz, the Neusiedlersee and the surrounding landscape with its vineyards and farmhouses.

   Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape: A small farmhouse surrounded by vineyards in the Hungarian village of Fertöboz. Fertöboz lies on the southern shore of the Neusiedler Lake, the Neusiedlersee, surrounded by the reeds of the lake. In the beginning of the 19th century, wine cellars were built in Fertöboz. The village is situated close to the Hungarian town of Sopron.

The largest part of the Neusiedlersee and the UNESCO World Heritage Site is situated in Austria, only a small part lies in Hungary. The Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape gained the status as a UNESCO World Heritage in 2001.

   Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape: The wrought iron gates at the entrance to the Fertöd-Esterházy Palace. The palace is situated in Fertöd, a town nearby Sopron in Hungary. The palace was inspired by Versailles. The most important ancestral seats of the Esterházy family were the Fertöd-Esterházy Palace and the Esterházy Palace at Eisenstadt in Austria.

   Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape: The Fertöd-Esterházy Palace in the town Fertöd. From 1766 to 1790, the palace was the home of the composer Joseph Haydn, he lived in the servants' quarters, separate from the palace. Haydn worked for the Esterházy family for over thirty years as court composer. Haydn followed the Esterházy family as they moved among their palaces.

   Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape: A charming house and a draw well in Apetlon, a tiny village in Austria, nearby the Hungarian border. Apetlon is located on the eastern shores of the Neusiedlersee, this part of the lake is called Seewinkel. Apetlon is situated in the Neusiedlersee Seewinkel National Park, the park is connected to the Hungarian Fertö Hanság National Park.

   Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape: The Neusiedlersee is surrounded by the nature of the Pannonian Plain or the Carpathian Basin. The immense plain includes wetland areas with reeds, salt marshes and ponds. The reed belt of the Neusiedlersee is the second largest in Europe. The reeds are harvested in winter. Nearly all of the reeds are exported, mainly to the Netherlands.

    Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape: At Donnerskirchen, the reed belt is more than eight km wide. The Neusiedlersee is almost completely surrounded by a reed belt, after the Danube Delta, it is the largest continuous reed belt in Europe. Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape is a cross-border UNESCO World Heritage, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 2001.
