The Neusiedlersee (Lake Neusiedl) is one of the largest steppe lakes in Europe. The impressive lake is surrounded by the unique nature of the Pannonian Plain, also known as the Pannonian Basin, a huge lowland landscape in the southeastern part of Central Europe. The Neusiedlersee is surrounded by a vast wetland area with reedlands and ponds. The landscape is home to a unique flora and fauna. Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape: The Austrian village of Rust is located on the western shores of the Neusiedlersee (Lake Neusiedl). Along the shores of the lake are numerous small villages, farmhouses and palaces, surrounded by woods, vast steppe areas, vineyards and fields of sunflowers. The streets of Rust are paved with cobblestones and lined with colourful houses. Atop nearly every chimney is the nest of a stork. The Austrian Wine Academy is situated in Rust.

Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape: The Haydn Church in the Austrian town of Eisenstadt is also known as the Bergkirche. The church houses the organ on which the Austrian composer Joseph Haydn used to play. The Haydn Church is a calvary church; a pathway depicts the stages of the Passion of Jesus Christ. A small spiral staircase outside the church leads up to the small chapel on the roof with a statue of Jesus Christ Crucified.

Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape: Joseph Haydn is buried in the Haydn Mausoleum in Eisenstadt, Austria. This mausoleum is situated in the Haydn Church. Haydn spent about thirty years in Eisenstadt; he worked for the Esterházy family as the court composer and conductor. The Haydn Church is also known as 'Bergkirche'. Eisenstadt was once the seat of the Hungarian Esterházy family, a wealthy noble family.

Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape: The Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt, located near the Neusiedlersee and the Hungarian border. Joseph Haydn lived and worked in Eisenstadt; he was the court composer and conductor for the Esterházy family. Haydn was the composer of the tune for the German national anthem. It was originally written in honour of Emperor Franz II of Austria; the anthem was played for the first time in this Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt in 1797.

Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape: The Haydnsaal in the Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt. The Haydnsaal is the most famous room in the palace. The German national anthem, originally composed in honour of the emperor of Austria, was played for the first time in this room. This imposing palace was one of the summer residences of the Esterházy family. It was built in the 13th century and was converted into a Baroque palace in the 18th century.

The reed belt of the Neusiedlersee is the second largest in Europe; the reed belt of the Danube Delta is the largest.

It is part of the National Park Neusiedlersee-Seewinkel. The Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001.

Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape: The Seewinkel and Neusiedlersee are surrounded by the breathtaking nature of the Pannonian Plain Carpathian Basin). The Neusiedlersee and the Seewinkel are renowned for their rich birdlife; 341 bird species have been recorded around the lakes, including the great tit and the wren. Particularly in spring and autumn, the Neusiedlersee is a favourite location to observe migratory birds, such as the common crane, the white stork and the Eurasian spoonbill.

Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape: The Türkentor in Purbach am Neusiedlersee. The Türkentor (the Turkish Gate) is a remnant of the Turkish threat in the 16th and 17th centuries. Purbach am Neusiedlersee is a small town on the western shore of the lake. It is located close to Eisenstadt. This small historic town is well known for its viticulture and is surrounded by one of the most important wine-growing regions in Austria. The town is separated from the lake by a vast reed belt.
