Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape: The Tokaj wine region is located in northeastern Hungary, at the confluence of the river Tisza and river Bodrog. The town of Tokaj is the centre of the Tokaj wine region. The Tokaj wine region is renowned for its sweet wines made by wine grapes affected by the Noble Rot (Botrytis cinerea), the Tokaji aszú is the oldest botrytized wine in the world. It is not certain when the first wines were produced in the Tokaj wine region. The Hungarian Prince Rákóczi gave King Louis XIV several bottles of the Tokaj wine from his Tokaji estate, from that time Tokaj wine was served at the court of Versailles, King Louis XIV declared it the 'Wine of Kings, King of Wines'. The Tokaji aszú wines were famous throughout the Royal Courts of Europe by the end of the 17th century. Prince Rákóczi was asked to classify the finest vineyards around the 28 villages of the Tokaj wine region. The Tokaj wine region had the first wine classification system in Europe. In 1920, due to the Treaty of Trianon, a small part of the Tokaj wine region now belongs to Slovakia. The Slovak Tokaj wine region is allowed to use the 'of Tokaj' label if they apply the quality control regulation of Hungary. The Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape gained the status as a UNESCO World Heritage in 2002.

   Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape: No. 424,353 'Buffalo' is one of the most famous Hungarian steam locomotives, it stands at the railway station of Tokaj, the winemaking town is surrounded by the vineyards of the Tokaj wine region. The Tokaj wine region had the first wine classification system in Europe. The Tokaj wine region was declared a UNESCO World Heritage.

   The Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape: The historic Tokaj wine region is the oldest protected wine region in the world, a wine classification system was already introduced in 1730. The wine region is situated in northeastern Hungary, at the confluence of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers. The historic town of Tokaj is the centre of the Tokaj wine region.

In the Tokaj wine region, the vaulted ceilings and walls of the historic wine cellars are covered with the characteristic blackish grey mold. In 1700, Prince Rákóczi was requested to classify the finest vineyards around the 28 villages of the Tokaj wine region.

   Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape: On the southern slopes of the Kopasz Hill wine grapes have been grown for centuries. The radio and TV transmission tower on top of the more than five hundred metres high Kopasz Hill is dominating the Tokaj wine region. The Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002.

   Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape: The Tokaj wine region is renowned for its sweet wines made by grapes affected by the Noble Rot, also known as Botrytis cinerea, a kind of grey mold. The Tokaji aszú is the oldest botrytized wine in the world, the Tokaji Essence is a very rare wine, a true collector's item.

   Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape: The historic Rákóczi wine cellar, the correct way to sample the Tokaj wine: Furmint, dry Szamorodni, sweet Szamorodni and then the Tokaji aszú. The Tokaji aszú wines has numbers from 3-6, the higher the number, the sweeter the wine, six is the most sweet and expensive, the number (puttonyos) is printed on the label.

   Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape: The Tokaj wine mature underground in the long cave like cellars. Beneath the town of Tokaj stretches a  labyrinth of about 1.5 km of wine cellars and tunnels. The historic cellars and tunnels were dug into the volcanic rocks between the 15th and 17th centuries. During wartime, the inhabitants of Tokaj found shelter in the wine cellars.

   Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape: It is not certain when the first wines were made in the Tokaj Wine Region. The first vineyards were probably established in the 12th century. The Tokaji aszú wines were renowned throughout the Royal Courts of Europe by the end of the 17th century. The Tokaj wine was the favorite wine of the composer Joseph Haydn.

    Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape: Several wineries in Tokaj. Due to the Treaty of Trianon, a small part of the Tokaj wine region now belongs to Slovakia, before 1920, it was part of the Kingdom of Hungary. The Slovak Tokaj wine region is allowed to use the 'of Tokaji' label if the wines apply the quality control regulation of Hungary.
