Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape: The Tokaj wine region is located in northeastern Hungary, at the confluence of the river Tisza and river Bodrog. The town of Tokaj is the centre of the Tokaj wine region. The Tokaj wine region is renowned for its sweet wines made by wine grapes affected by the Noble Rot (Botrytis cinerea), the Tokaji aszú is the oldest botrytized wine in the world. It is not certain when the first wines were produced in the Tokaj wine region. The Hungarian Prince Rákóczi gave King Louis XIV several bottles of the Tokaj wine from his Tokaji estate, from that time Tokaj wine was served at the court of Versailles, King Louis XIV declared it the 'Wine of Kings, King of Wines'. The Tokaji aszú wines were famous throughout the Royal Courts of Europe by the end of the 17th century. Prince Rákóczi was asked to classify the finest vineyards around the 28 villages of the Tokaj wine region. The Tokaj wine region had the first wine classification system in Europe. In 1920, due to the Treaty of Trianon, a small part of the Tokaj wine region now belongs to Slovakia. The Slovak Tokaj wine region is allowed to use the 'of Tokaj' label if they apply the quality control regulation of Hungary. The Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape gained the status as a UNESCO World Heritage in 2002.
