Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape: The tiny village of Hallstatt is located near the Hallstätter See in the Salzkammergut region of  Austria. The Salzkammergut stretches from Salzburg to the Dachstein Mountain area. Human activity in the Salzkammergut began in prehistoric times. The Hallstatt Salt Mine is the oldest salt mine in the whole world. The first salt deposits were exploited in the second century BC. The Hallstatt Salt Mine was the basis of the prosperity of the Salzkammergut. This prosperity is reflected in the architecture of Hallstatt and surroundings. Hallstatt is also known for the prehistoric Hallstatt Culture, a culture in Central Europe in the Early Iron Age (ca. 800-450 BC). The Dachstein Mountain is 2996 metres high. The Dachstein Mountain is situated in a glaciated part of the Alps close to Hallstatt. The Dachstein Mountain has a large cave system. The Dachstein Mammut Cave and Dachstein Ice Cave can be visited, the Dachstein Ice Cave has fascinating ice formations. A cable car runs in three sections to the Dachstein mountain area, the first section leads from the Obertraun valley station to the Schönbergalm intermediate station, starting point for the trip to the Dachstein Mammut Cave and the Dachstein Ice Cave. The second section leads to the Krippenstein peak at 2109 metres. From here the Dachstein glacier can be seen. Last stop of the cable car is the Valley Station Gjaidalm at 1750 metres. Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape gained the status as a UNESCO World Heritage in 1997.

A one hour guided tour shows the natural wonders of the Dachstein Ice Cave. The amazing ice formations has names such as the Castle of the Holy Grail, the Tristan Chapel and the Parsifal Cathedral. In some places the ice thickness is 25 meters. It is important that visitors are dressed warmly and wear sturdy shoes.

The Dachstein Ice Cave is situated high above the Trauntal Valley, just a short walk from the mountain station Schönbergalm. The ice formations are formed by the ice cold wind and water which seeps from the mountains into the caves, the dripping water freezes and forms breathtaking ice formations. The ice formations stay frozen in summer.

The platform is constructed on the edge of a mountain above a 400 metres deep abyss. It can be reached from the Krippenstein mountain station, a walk of less than 20 minutes. Mountain weather can change quickly, the following photo was taken only two minutes later. The Five fingers is also known as the 'World Heritage View Point'.
