Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape: The tiny village of Hallstatt is located near the Hallstätter See in the Salzkammergut region of  Austria. The Salzkammergut stretches from Salzburg to the Dachstein Mountain area. Human activity in the Salzkammergut began in prehistoric times. The Hallstatt Salt Mine is the oldest salt mine in the whole world. The first salt deposits were exploited in the fifth millennium BC. The Hallstatt Salt Mine was the basis of the prosperity of the Salzkammergut. This prosperity is reflected in the architecture of Hallstatt and its surroundings. The village is also known for the prehistoric Hallstatt culture, a culture in Central Europe in the Early Iron Age (ca. 800–450 BC). The Dachstein is 2,996 metres high. This mountain is situated in a glaciated part of the Alps close to Hallstatt. This mountain has a large and unique cave system. The Dachstein Mammut Cave and the Dachstein Ice Cave can be visited; the Dachstein Ice Cave has fascinating ice formations. A cable car runs in three sections to the Dachstein mountain area. The first section leads from the Obertraun valley station to the Schönbergalm intermediate station: the starting point for the trip to the Dachstein Mammut Cave and the Dachstein Ice Cave. The second section leads to the Krippenstein peak at 2,109 metres. From here, the imposing Dachstein glacier can be viewed. There is a third section that descends from the Krippenstein peak to the Valley Station Gjaidalm at 1,750 metres; this is the last station. The Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape gained status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

The Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape is located in Austria. The Salzkammergut stretches from the city of Salzburg to the imposing Dachstein Mountains. The Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape gained status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

   Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape: One of the fascinating ice formations in the Dachstein Ice Cave. A one-hour guided tour shows the natural wonders of the Dachstein Ice Cave. The amazing ice formations have names such as the Castle of the Holy Grail, Tristan Chapel and Parsifal Cathedral. In some places, the ice thickness is 25 metres. It is important that visitors are dressed warmly and wear sturdy shoes.

   Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape: The amazingly coloured ice formations of the Dachstein Ice Cave. This cave is situated high above the Trauntal Valley, just a short walk from the mountain station Schönbergalm. These ice formations are formed due to the icy cold wind and water which seeps from the mountains into the cave; the dripping water freezes and forms breathtaking ice formations. These ice formations stay frozen in summer.

   Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape: The Heilbronn Memorial Chapel on the Krippenstein Peak. The top cable car station is on top of the Krippenstein Peak at 2,109 metres. The Heilbronn Memorial Chapel was erected to commemorate the Heilbronn Dachstein Tragedy at Easter 1954 when ten pupils and three teachers were killed during a heavy snowstorm. The search operation was one of the largest in Alpine history. The first victims were found on Easter Tuesday.

   Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape: The small village of Hallstatt and the Hallstätter See viewed from the Krippenstein peak; a paraglider above the lake. The Dachstein Mountains are a paradise for paragliders. The summit of the Krippenstein offers breathtaking views over Lake Hallstatt and the Salzkammergut. The village of Hallstatt is set at the foot of the Dachstein Mountains.

   Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape: The Five Fingers is a viewing platform in the shape of a hand with five fingers. The platform is constructed on the edge of a mountain above a 400-metre-deep abyss. It can be reached from the Krippenstein mountain station, a walk of less than twenty minutes. Mountain weather can change quickly; the following photo was taken only two minutes later. The Five Fingers is also known as the 'World Heritage View Point'.

   Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape: The viewing platform the Five Fingers in the mist. The Five Fingers is called the 'most spectacular viewing platform in the Alps'. The four-metre-long fingers of the platform are located on the edge of the mountain above an abyss more than 400 metres deep. The spectacular Dachstein suspension bridge, called the 'Stairway to Nothingness', leads to a small glass platform that seems to hover above a breathtaking abyss.

   Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape: The magnificent Dachstein glacier can be viewed from the Gjaidalm. The last stop of the cable car is the Gjaidalm mountain station at 1,750 metres. Mount Dachstein is located in a glaciated part of the Austrian Alps near Hallstatt. The Dachstein is 2,996 metres high and has a large cave system. The Dachstein Mammut Cave and Dachstein Ice Cave can be visited; the ice cave has amazing ice formations.

    Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape: The tiny village of Hallstatt is set on the shores of the Hallstätter See (Lake Hallstatt), close to the Dachstein in the Salzkammergut region of Austria. Hallstatt is well known for the exploitation of salt, a source of wealth in the Salzkammergut from the 2nd century BC until the mid-20th century. Hallstatt is also known for the prehistoric Hallstatt Culture; an important culture in Central Europe in the period of the Early Iron Age.

    Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape: A small chapel near Hallstatt. This village is located in the Salzkammergut area in Austria. The village is also renowned for the prehistoric Hallstatt Culture, a central European culture of the Early Iron Age, approx. 800–450 BC. During excavations in the 19th century, numerous artefacts of the Hallstatt Culture were found; several artefacts are housed in the Hallstatt Museum.

    Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape: The oldest salt mine in the world lies in the mountains high above Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut region in Austria. Salt mining began 7,000 years ago. Prehistoric man discovered several caves, filled with salt, in the mountains near Hallstatt. Now, a short ride on a funicular railway takes visitors to the entrance of the oldest salt mine in the world. The funicular railway can be seen on the left-hand side.
