Rock Drawings in Valcamonica

Rock Drawings in Valcamonica: Valcamonica is a valley situated in the Lombardy Alps in Italy. Valcamonica takes its name from the Camunni, ancient people who lived in the Valcamonica during the Iron Age, as documented by the Roman author Pliny the Elder. Valcamonica contains one of greatest collections of prehistoric rock art in the world. More than 140,000 rock drawings were pecked into the surface of 2,400 rocks. The rock drawings in Valcamonica were made over a period of 8000 years. Most of the rock art was made by the people of the Camunni during the Iron Age. The themes are agriculture, magic, hunting scenes, huts, human figures and the Rosa Camuna. The rock drawings are spread all over Valcamonica. The Rock Drawings in Valcamonica can be seen in several archaeological parks in the valley, such as: the Naquane National Rock Art Park and the City Archaeological Park of Seradina-Bedolina, both situated in the town of Capo di Ponte, and the Rock Art Park of Foppe di Nadro in the small town of Ceto. The Rock Drawings in Valcamonica gained the status as a UNESCO World Heritage in 1979. Several other UNESCO World Heritage Rock Art Sites elsewhere in Europe: Alta, Tanum, Siega Verde and Côa Valley.
