Falkenlust Castle in Brühl

Schloss Falkenlust - Falkenlust Castle is located in Brühl, a town in Germany, about 20 km from Cologne. Falkenlust Castle was built in the period 1729-1740. It was built for Clemens August I of Bavaria, at first a Prince Bishop of Regensburg and Hildesheim, later Archbishop of Cologne and Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. Falkenlust was the favourite residence of Clemens August I, he used the small castle for entertaining guests and to practise his favourite sport of falconry. Falkenlust Castle is one of the most beautiful creations of the German Rococo, together with Augustusburg Castle. Falkenlust Castle is known for its staircase, decorated with Dutch ceramic tiles, and its mirror cabinet, this impressive mirror cabinet of Falkenlust Castle was mentioned by the composer Mozart in his diary. Falkenlust Castle stands in the Park of Augustusburg Castle. The Park of Augustusburg Castle was modelled after the gardens of Versailles. A small chapel is situated close to Falkenlust Castle, the chapel is adorned with shells and semi-precious stones such as lapis lazuli. Just a short stroll from Falkenlust lies Augustusburg Castle. Falkenlust is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site: Castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust at Brühl. The Castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust at Brühl became a UNESCO World Heritage in 1984.

The chapel is decorated with hundreds of seashells, pebbles and semi-precious gemstones. Inside, the chapel resembles a shell grotto. In the 18th century, no European estate of importance was considered complete without such an artificial shell grotto.
