Cathedral, Torre Civica and Piazza Grande, Modena: The Piazza Grande is the central square in the City of Modena and the location of two important buildings, the cathedral and Torre Civica. Modena Cathedral is a masterpiece of the Italian architect Lanfranco and sculptor Wiligelmo. The Modena Cathedral is the only known work of Lanfranco. The construction of the Modena Cathedral started in 1099 under the direction of Lanfranco. Wiligelmo decorated the cathedral under construction in the period 1099-1106. Some parts of Modena Cathedral were decorated by the Campionese Masters from Lombardy. The cathedral was consecrated in 1184. On the north side of the Modena Cathedral rises the 88.32 meter high Torre della Ghirlandina, the bell tower of the cathedral. The Torre della Ghirlandina is the symbol of Modena, being visible from all directions outside Modena. The Torre Civica is the Clock Tower of the Town Hall of Modena. Modena is located  in northern Italy, about 108 km from the City of Verona and about 90 km from Ferrara, the Renaissance city. The Cathedral, Torre Civica and Piazza Grande, Modena gained status as a UNESCO World Heritage in 1997.
