Blaenavon Industrial Landscape: In de streek rond Blaenavon werd aan het begin van de Industriële Revolutie ijzererts aangetroffen. In 1788 werd een ijzersmelterij gebouwd. Na de winning van ijzererts werd in Blaenavon steenkool aangetroffen en ontgonnen. Om de vele arbeiders voor deze industrie te huisvesten ontstond het stadje Blaenavon. Blaenavon ligt in het zuiden van Wales.

Steenkoolmijn de Big Pit dateert uit 1880, maar ligt op de plaats van een oudere mijn. Tot WO I werkten er ca. 1300 mijnwerkers in de Big Pit. Toen de mijn in 1980 sloot, werkten er nog 250 mijnwerkers. De Big Pit doet nog steeds dienst als mijn, maar nu om bezoekers met de mijnlift 90 meter onder de grond te brengen. Met een mijnwerker/gids maakt men gekleed met helm en lamp als mijnwerker een tocht door de soms heel lage mijngangen. Vlakbij de Big Pit liggen de ijzersmelterijen van Blaenavon. Hier staan arbeidershuizen en een winkel voor de arbeiders.

by the Blaenavon Company in 1860. It was deepened in 1880 to its present depth

of 300 ft. Big Pit was a massive employer in Blaenavon, 1,300 men worked at the

coal mine during the 1920s. The Big Pit was closed in 1980.
