The Four Lifts on the Canal du Centre: De scheepsliften in het Canal du Centre (Centrumkanaal) werden eind 19de, begin 20ste eeuw gebouwd voor het goederenvervoer over het Canal du Centre. De scheepsliften in het Canal du Centre overbruggen samen een verval van ruim 66 m. Lift 1 bij Houdeng-Goegnies werd in 1888 gebouwd en is de oudste van de scheepsliften. De laatste van de scheepsliften in het Canal du Centre werd in 1917 gebouwd. In iedere lift kunnen twee boten. Van de oorspronkelijke acht scheepsliften in het Canal du Centre, zijn nog vier scheepsliften over. De vier overgebleven scheepsliften in het Canal du Centre zijn de enige hydraulische scheepsliften uit die tijd, die nog in werkende staat zijn. De vier scheepsliften liggen ca. 50 km ten zuiden van Brussel in België. Tegenwoordig worden de vier overgebleven scheepsliften in het Canal du Centre gebruikt voor de pleziervaart, het goederenvervoer gaat via een omleidingskanaal en de moderne scheepslift bij Thieu. De moderne scheepslift bij Thieu kan men bezoeken. Voor een pleziervaart over het Canal du Centre kan men inschepen bij lift 1 in Houdeng-Goegnies

Lift 1 bij Houdeng-Goegnies is in 1888 gebouwd en is de oudste van de scheepsliften.

lift twee boten. Oorspronkelijk stonden er acht scheepsliften in het Canal du Centre .

On a short stretch of the Canal du Centre the water level rises 66.2 m. To overcome

this difference 8 hydraulic boat lifts on the Canal du Centre were built in 1888-1917.
Of the 8 boat lifts on the Canal du Centre, the only ones in the world which
still exist in working condition are the Four Boat Lifts on the Canal du Centre.
